“Imagination is kindled by
or experiencing feelings.”
from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (1.9)
Daydreaming is a great way to feed your imagination.
And lucky for us the fall is a season of air which means, the winds are blowing and the ideas are coming with them. An amazing artist once spoke about the way an inspiration is carried on the wind. It comes rolling down off the hills, hitting you as you are simply taking a walk. Then you must sprint your way back home to catch those words and translate them onto paper, lest they move right by you and onto the next artist. What an image! I love the thought that all these great ideas are carried in the wind, and all you need to do is open yourself to hear them, see them, catch them, and bring them into being!
Why feed your imagination?
If you can’t dream it, visualize it, sense it, it will be awfully challenging to bring your heart’s desire into being. And busy days, just lead to more busy days, which lead to the same old habits and patterns. And then dreams have a tendency of being forgotten or put off.
Let’s cultivate a place in ourselves that is fertile for imagination. With the yoga practice below you’ll open your heart to dream big and let go of the tension in your shoulders.
Think of this practice as an opportunity to create some new grooves in your mindset and let the new tunes play!
Speaking of tunes, here are some lyrics from one of my favorite daydreaming songs. Do you know it?
What a day for a daydream
What a day for a daydreamin’ boy
And I’m lost in a daydream
Dreamin’ ‘bout my bundle of joy
And even if time ain’t really on my side
It’s one of those days for takin’ a walk outside
I’m blowin’ the day to take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face on somebody’s new-mowed lawn
– The Lovin Spoonful
Take some time to sit by your favorite tree, watch the sun sparkle through the bright colored leaves, and let your imagination loose!
The practice of yoga begins now.
- Open the shoulders and chest. Happy shoulders for fall leaf raking or letting go of tension and stress.
- 4 minutes
- A wall or closed door 🙂
