Happy Shoulders Yoga Flow
When at peace and content
with oneself and others
(Santosha),
supreme joy is celebrated.
(Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 11.42)
As you’ve heard me say by now, it should not be the circumstances that dictate your experience. You can’t control life events. Instead choose how you wish to respond in the moment. You always have that choice. You have the control over how you will see and live in this moment, circumstances aside.
Have you heard the story about the teacher making pancakes?
The teacher decides one morning that he is going to make the best pancakes in the whole world for his students. So he goes about gathering the ingredients and assembling the pancakes. As he pours the batter, it splashes everywhere. The pancakes take on wild shapes. Some are undercooked. Some a little overcooked. Some have even been blessed with the extra seasoning that comes from being flipped onto the floor.
All the while the teacher is singing about the wonderful pancakes he is making. How they are the best pancakes in the whole world. How he pours love into making these delectable, misshapen, a little burnt, and gritty pancakes.
In walks a student and looks on the scene with horror. He sees the mess, he smells the burning, and he realizes what is for breakfast. Then he spies his teacher smiling from ear to ear, happy as can be.
What in the world is going on the student asks? His teacher replies, that he is making the best pancakes in the whole world for his beloved students. The student is aghast! What!?!
And the student in his shock loses all manners, and demands to know just how in the world is this so? Dear crazy teacher who most definitely has a screw loose.
The teacher smiles and says, it is with great love that he makes the pancakes. And the love that is poured into them, the action of expressing his love for his students, is a gift from the heart. It’s not what he’s doing. It’s how he is doing it. The teacher finds contentment and peace (santosha) not in the world’s idea of a perfect pancake, but in the act of offering love from his heart with his perfect pancake expression.
The student realizes that his own response can take the shape of gratitude. He doesn’t have to eat the pancake 🙂 but he can be full in his heart, knowing that his teacher has offered a gift of the heart.
How you choose to respond to life and engage with it, will determine your experience. The sky could be falling and your thoughts might go to the really cute, Chicken Little movie with all the wonderful karaoke. 🙂 Rather than the not so nice ideas about falling skies.
